I put on the hat, picked up the pumpkin and knocked on nine doors. People screamed. People filmed. Nobody gave me anything.
Every door went the same way. Someone opens it, does the voice people save for babies, shouts for whoever else is in the house, and then the two of them stand there filming a cat in a hat instead of handing over anything.
The kid at the ninth door was the only one who understood the arrangement. One orange sweet. I cannot eat it, I cannot unwrap it, and I am absolutely not giving it back.
The pumpkins get the attention every year, and they are just vegetables with a candle in them. I am wearing an entire costume.
